Fort Valley Ecological Restoration Project Summary

Fort Valley Restoration Sites
The Nature Conservancy

Ecological restoration activities include thinning (max. diameter is 16 inches dbh), burning, road obliteration, meadow and spring restoration, biological noxious weed control, recreation management on the Freidlein Prairie Road, and trail relocation/obliteration/construction.

There are two phases to this project. Phase 1 implements a number of research and demonstration approaches to restoration. It also implements several restoration projects not related to tree thinning. There is a multi-party monitoring break between the two phases to last at least one growing season. While the environmental assessment proposed and analyzed specific treatments for Phase 2, the results of the multi-party monitoring may alter proposed treatments, and may require an amendment (and subsequent public involvement) to the environmental assessment.

The following table summarizes the projects by phase. See map below for location and description of thinning and burning treatments.

Acres in the table are predicted acres from the Environmental Assessment. Layout of units in progress has noted changes (reducing actual treatment acres) not reflected in this table.
